Values
As county clerk, I will focus on strengthening democracy by making sure everyone's voice is represented and that the people's government is accessible and responsive.
Everyone's Voice is Heard.
Democracy only works when we all show up. The very basic principle is that we all have a say in our future and who represents us. In order to deliver on this promise, we need to make sure every eligible voter is registered and can cast their ballot. Jefferson County boasts some of the highest turnout in the state, yet we know gaps remain for voters of color, working class voters, and young voters. These voters often face the steepest barriers to accessing democracy, yet their voices are essential. I have a track record of increasing youth voter turnout double digits above the national average and will continue that work by advocating for legislation that expands access to voter registration and elections, focus community outreach on closing gaps in voter participation, and making sure Jefferson County elections continue to run securely.
Government Should Serve Us.
When government responds to people's needs and improves our lives, we build greater trust in democracy. As clerk, I will make sure that all of the government services my office oversees—elections, motor vehicles, recording, marriage licenses, passports, and liquor licenses—are run efficiently and we innovate services.
Finally, I would like to explore fostering deeper connections between local elected officials in Jefferson County and constituents. The clerk's office can strengthen democracy by making sure that elected officials understand what people need, and that people can see how government can work for them. By building this mutually beneficial feedback, we can create greater trust and increase overall civic engagement in Jefferson County.
