About Nicole

From a very young age, I’ve cared about creating a more just and fair world. I learned these values from my parents—my father, a lifelong educator and fierce advocate for civil rights; my mother, a child of Lebanese immigrants whose family overcame tragedy through resilience, neighborly love, and government assistance. My parents taught me that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and it’s our duty to care for each other.

So I became a teacher like my father, grandfather, and grandmother before me. Yet as a teacher, I grew tired of schools getting tasked with solving all of society's problems—childhood poverty, income inequality, climate change, or lack of healthcare to name a few—when the institution that could actually solve those problems, our government, was not responding to people’s real needs.

In 2016, I was in graduate school studying education policy when the election results knocked me off my course and onto another path. I started knocking doors, getting more politically involved, and decided to dedicate my life to making our democracy deliver for everyday people. That’s what led me to leave my career in education and become the executive director of one of the best youth civic engagement organizations in the country.  I've managed large, highly effective teams to success, leading to historic youth turnout in the past 3 election cycles. Now I'm ready to take my experience defending and improving our democracy to my home here in Jefferson County.

Why I'm Running

Nothing is more important right now than protecting democracy. And yes, the threats to democracy are explicit in the form of voter suppression, election denialism, and praise for autocrats. But it’s also the quiet forces, of regular people staying home instead of turning out, of people losing faith in democracy as a system that can deliver a better future, that worry me the most. We need to deliver on the promise of a representative government that addresses our real problems and builds a better future for all of us.

As county clerk, I will rebuild faith in our democracy and build a representative government—by ensuring everyone’s voice is represented in the democratic process and by making government services accessible and effective. We need to re-engage voters who have been left behind and foster equitable participation in our democracy. I also want to build connections with local elected officials to ensure representation starts but doesn't end at the ballot box.

Right now, the threats are real and existential. We need a clerk and recorder that can lead a team beyond what’s already been done and prepare for the fights ahead. I have the track record, experience, and vision to meet the moment and realize the possibility of a multiracial democracy here in Jefferson County. Do something today to meet this moment in history: support my campaign to be the next Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder.
